The project was focused on developing a hybrid television service that combines traditional television broadcasting and web content on smart TVs. In cooperation with RTV Slovenija, an application based on the HbbTV standard was developed, allowing viewers to access additional digital content directly through their TV sets. The RTV 4D application offers users a multi-day TV guide, access to the archive of radio and television shows, radio live streams, and an overview of news and other contents from the rtvslo.si portal.
At the Multimedia Lab, we participated in the development and implementation of this hybrid application for smart TV receivers. Special emphasis was placed on user experience design and the adaptation of the user interface for TV screen environments, where the user navigates using a remote control. It was necessary to take into account the limitations of television platforms while simultaneously ensuring a clear and organized presentation of a large volume of diverse content. The application operates in a hybrid TV environment, where the broadcast television signal contains additional metadata about available applications. Based on this, the TV receiver detects the presence of the application, and the user can launch it by pressing the red button on their remote control, after which the content loads via an internet connection.
